on the MLTI Middle School Asset Manager on Tuesday, November 11th. As
a result, the MLTI Middle School Asset Manager (http://
assets.mlti.org) will not be available for use on that day. Please

Fall 2008 Student Survey

Dear Teacher Leader
In addition to being administered slightly later than in previous years, this year?s MLTI fall student survey is slightly different than in the past. Instead of collecting a broad spectrum of data about student use, this year?s fall survey is focused on collecting
information about students? ability to access, evaluate, and synthesize information found on the Internet, an important 21st Century skill. A link to the survey can be found on the following webpage: http://www.usm.maine.edu/cepare/surveys.htm. Students should be instructed to visit this link, click on the "MLTI Student Survey ? Fall 2008?, and complete the survey. The password to complete the survey is fall08. The deadline to complete the survey is Wednesday, November 26, 2008.

Thank you for taking the time to provide this important feedback to

Software Image Feedback Conference Call

Dear MLTI Schools,

As you are aware, each year the MLTI updates and revises the software
and configurations (aka the image) on the MLTI devices. This process
takes over half of the year to prepare, engineer, and test before it
is delivered to your schools. The Department is seeking feedback on
the software image so that we can work with Apple to design the next
iteration of the "MLTI Image".

There are two avenues for providing feedback. The Studywiz "207
Faculty Center" has a discussion activity for any teacher user to
submit thoughts and suggestions in the Help Desk folder. This
discussion item will remain live through the month of November.
Additionally, the Department is hosting three 90 minute conference
calls to gather feedback and ideas about the software image. Those
calls will be held on the following dates:

November 13, Thursday, 10:30 am to 12 pm
November 13, Thursday, 3 pm to 4:30 pm
November 14, Friday, 9 am to 10:30 am

EcoScience Content Meeting Incentives

This year there is a new program on all 7th and 8th grade laptops
called Ecobeaker Maine Explorer. (It looks like a beaker with ME on
it). Check out your applications folder.
This program has been designed expressly for the MLTI program by a
dedicated group that includes 23 Maine middle school teachers. Each
"lab" within the program visits (virtually) a different habitat in
Maine and uses that habitat to explore ecological concepts such as
runoff, succession, keystone predators, invasive species and the "edge
effect". Plus there is a 6th unit that lets students see "under the
hood" and get their first glimpse at computer programing. Each lab is
designed to take just one to two weeks of instructional time.
Ecobeaker comes with Noteshare notebooks with complete lesson plans,
handouts and assessments, all aligned with the new MLRs. Each lab has
a specially designed field exercise that brings students outdoors.
This fall at the MLTI subject area conferences, the teachers who have

). This is a great opportunity to learn from teachers who have been
using this program in their classrooms for the past three years.
EcoscienceWorks will pay $50 towards a substitute for your day. By
attending you will be entered into a drawing for an ipod shuffle. One
will be given away at each MLTI content meeting for EcoscienceWorks.
Plus for the first 100 teachers who use one of the labs and the
programming component (Program a Bunny) in their classroom, there is a
$100 incentive.
Hope to see you all at one content meeting. Details regarding
substitute reimbursement will be provided at the meeting.

Based on feedback from brschools and utilization data, accounts allocated to a school will no brlonger be limited to the number of MLTI devices at the school. brOverall, the system will allow approximately 40,000 users. Until the brtotal number of accounts in use exceeds 35,000 users, schools may brcreate accounts for students, teachers, or staff as necessary for brsuccessful implementation of the system. Dear MLTI Schools,brWe are aware that many schools have reported enrollment numbers that brexceed the number of available MLTI devices at their schools. We have brbeen working to resolve these issues. Devices are bring shipped now to brschools that reported needs (*see list at the end of this message). brHopefully we have not missed anyone.brbrTo better understand the needs, we have extracted from MEDMS the brOctober enrollment figures as reported by your school and compared brthem to the Asset Manager. As we expected, there are many schools on brthe lists which have a need larger than their asset pool. However, brwe also have a significant number of schools, which based on this brsimple numerical comparison, show a huge number of unallocated brdevices. There are a few schools for which no MEDMS data was bravailable, so the number of unallocated devices is grossly inflated. brIf your school's data is incomplete please report the missing data brelements to the MLTI Project team.

The MLTI is committed to supporting best instructional practices in brliteracy and numeracy. Middle school teachers across Maine are brfinding NoteShare to be a powerful tool for supporting literacy and brnumeracy in all subjects. In this workshop we will explore the brNoteShare features and some of the pedagogical strategies we have brfound most useful in the classroom, view examples, and construct new brnotebooks.brbrParticipants should come prepared with content ideas and materials to brinclude in a notebook they will construct during the course of the brday (Please bring your laptops). Asset Redistribution for Summer 2007brbrThe MLTI Project Team and Apple Project Team will be working together this summer to redistribute MLTI 7th and 8th grade laptops based on anticipated 2007-08 student enrollments. This redistribution process will begin on June 11, 2007 and will continue throughout the summer until all laptop transfers are complete. Laptop transfers will fall into three possible scenarios:brbr1. Schools that will receive additional devices to cover predicted increasing student enrollments;br2. Schools that will return additional devices to cover predicted decreasing student enrollments; andbr3. Schools that will neither receive nor return devices since their enrollments are predicted to neither decrease nor increase significantly.

Adobe Software

Dear MLTI Schools, If you are attempting to install Adobe software titles onto the MLTI II 2006 laptops, and you are experiencing technical problems, please contact the Adobe Technical Support Help Desk at 800-642-3623. Please work through the problem with their technical support personnel, and as always, get a case number. If you successfully install the software, please forward details to Jeff Mao, jeff.mao at maine.gov. Based on feedback from a number of schools, for products like Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, you may not be successful. In this case, please forward your Adobe case number and any other relevant information to jeff Mao, jeff.mao at maine.gov. We will assemble your case numbers and escalate with Adobe to attempt to resolve the issue. For Adobe Acrobat Reader, schools have reported success with installation and use provided the software is installed manually from the admin login, and the application is run once as the admin user.
